Sacrilege were no doubt one of the most original British speed/thrash metal bands with a definite style of their own. The band's debut Behind The Realms Of Madness is basically an underproduced and rough but very intense full-frontal assault. Lynda Simpson's vocals are harsh but appropriate for the style and give the band's sound an original touch. Despite the raw feel, tracks like At Death's Door and A Violation Of Something Sacred are some strangely effective pieces. In comparison, the second album Within The Prophecy is notably less straightforward but also heavier and more pounding. Here the songwriting became more ambitious with some particularly long and complex tracks especially near the end. Speed-wise this album is less frantic than the debut, with more refined vocals and some mid-tempo riffs, though far from the doom metal sound that the band would finally adopt. Even with some occasional loss of focus, Sacrilege's music is some of the more intriguing I've heard.
